Managing School Stress

School is said to be a venue for learning, a place where you can meet new people, prepare your future, and enjoy life as a youth. It doesn’t mention anything about stress. However, a good combination of schoolwork, schedule and bad personal habits can turn something as important as school into something that is worth worrying. Here are the ways on how you can limit and manage school stress:

Get organized

One of the best things about going to school is learning the lesson in responsibility and organization. But somewhere, somehow organization is really not much in the vocabulary of students. Looking for important notes you have written in a piece of paper, books, paper, calculator, and even searching the entire room for your pen result to unnecessary stress. What you should do is to keep your workstation, files and folders clean, well-arranged and properly labeled.

Learn to prioritize

Put schoolwork first and the rest, second. If you have several assignments to finish, never go on a date, hang out with friends, fool around in the hallway of your dorm, or gatecrash a party of another school. All these are fun but, again, they are secondary. This doesn’t mean though that you have to forego everything that is outside your schoolwork. Just make sure that you realize the real purpose of school and keep it in mind.

Do not procrastinate

The earlier you start doing your schoolwork, the greater the chances that you enjoy the “fun-side” of school. Manage your time and plan your study hours. Prioritize those that are due immediately and assignments that require more work. Learn how long will it take for you to finish a homework and create a target date to finish. Doing as much homework as you can immediately free your weekend so that you can go to where you want to go and do whatever you want to do.

Learn to say ‘no’

When you have schoolwork in line, do not accept any invitation from your friends or family. Explain to them the importance of getting your assignment finished. This is probably one of the hardest to learn but you will be surprised how your family and friends will understand your situation.

Ask for an extension

If you have done everything that is said above and still find yourself behind schedule, do not bang your head on the table or give up everything and go to your friend’s house party. Asking for an extension from your professor is still the best alternative.
