I have seen Marthas grave, wroteCharlotte, mournfully,—the place whereher ashes lie in a foreign country. The simple phrase is more pathetic thanthe much-quoted description in Shirley ofJessies last resting-place. Close upon this grief came news of Miss 146 Charlotte Bronte at Home Branwells serious illness. Her nieces madehaste to pack their trunks and engageplaces in the diligence for a hurried journeyhomeward. They were in the act of set-ting out when a second letter brought wordthat their aunt had died, October 29, 1842.
