Excerpt from “Anxiety: 21 Ways to Calm Your Anxious Brain”:You feel it in your chest. Your throat tightens. You want to scream. The terror wells up inside of you. Sometimes you feel like you must be the only person in the world who is experiencing this type of pain and anxiety. Other times, you feel it is an old friend. After all, the only thing you seem to be able to count on is that your anxiety will come back. No matter what you do or where you go, it is there to remind you of its awful but consistent presence.

Anxiety is one of the most popular conditions that are plaguing people all around you. We are in a world that is filled with reasons to worry: from survival to feeding our families to making sure our boss is happy. We see people spending billions of dollars on health care trying to treat the anxiety epidemic. If they don’t get pills from the doctor, maybe they are buying pills off the street. Maybe they are self-medicating using some other means, like alcohol or marijuana. It doesn’t matter though… Many of the drugs and alcohol are only a temporary fix. Once the high or happy feelings from the medications wear off, you are back to your old anxious self.

Many of us are natural worry warts. We worry about our families. We worry about the bills. We are terrified that our bosses will fire us every time we make a mistake. As a society, we are high strung and anxious. You think that you’re the only one who doesn’t have yourself together, but you are wrong. Anxiety is at its highest epidemic. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, it affects 40 million adults.

You might think that all that worrying is good for you. The truth is that worrying induces a chronic state of stress in our bodies. We never seem to relax. Our bodies learn that a constant and chronic state of alertness is the norm. Meanwhile, it is releasing boatloads of cortisol stress hormone into our bodies. Cortisol stress hormone is responsible for our increase in belly fat, our inability to sleep and relax, and it causes forgetfulness and a brain fog that we can’t seem to pull ourselves out of.

When you are in a chronic state of stress and anxiety, your brain starts to wire itself for that fight or flight response. It can’t streamline processes used for memory and for learning. You wonder why you don’t seem to get ahead at work, home or school. It is because your anxiety is truly decreasing the brain processing and problem solving power that your brain naturally has. You are dampening all of your cognitive functioning. It is no wonder that we are unable to control our emotions, and we easily snap at others when we don’t mean to. As you know, our inability to control our tempers and outbursts is also associated to our constant state of stress and anxiety. Without rest and meditation, our brain never runs at maximum efficiency. We ask it to limp along and hope that we can function on what little processing power that it can give us without the rest it needs.

The purpose of this ebook is to make you aware of how stress and anxiety are holding you back from everything that you want. Your anxiety is breaking down the natural systems in your body. The cortisol hormone is damaging your ability to learn and to problem solve. It is damaging your organs and your cells and your tissues. If you don’t stop the chronic symptoms of anxiety, eventually illness will overcome your body and your mind as a result. If this book helps even 1 person to reduce their anxiety, then it will have accomplished its purpose.
