Placing his family upon a raft,he made his way to Covington, Kentucky,liere he arried in September, 1851, hav-ing with him about one hundred and fiftydollars. Through his acquaintance with thelumber trade and lumber dealers, however,he. soon succeeded in obtaining temporaryemployment at measuring lumber on thewharves, and gradually he built up a busi-ness of selling shingles, for which he re-ceived a commission of fifty cents per thou-sand. One morning he conducted a largetransaction and returned home with twohundred dollars in his possession. Thisseemed to him a large sum, for in the mean-time he had passed through very troubledfinancial waters. Again he became connectedwith the lumber trade, having a yard inCovington in partnership with a man whohad equal capital with Air. Gray. An ex-tensive lumber dealer, who was accjuaintedwith Mr. Gray and knew his circumstances,assured the firm that they could get all thelumber they wanted from him on credit,—a fact which shows his business standingand the confidence reposed in his ability andmtegrity. He had not in the interval paidoff his Pennsylvania debts, but never for amoment had the determination or desire todo so left him; and when it became possiblefor him to once more engage in business,it seemed that the day might come when hecould met his obligatins, and accordinglyhe returned to the East, where he arrangedwith his creditors to make payment, givingnotes with approved security.
