How to Keep Stress from Interfering with Your Sleep

Related eBooks

Sleep is very important to the physical and emotional health of a person. It refreshes the body, recharges the brain and relaxes the muscles. Without sufficient sleep, you easily get agitated, annoyed, frustrated, and irritated over little things. What’s ironic is that the same symptoms that are attributed to stress affect the sleeping pattern of a person which results in more stress.

If you find it hard to sleep at night because of stress, here are things you can do:

1. Clean up. Your sleeping environment has a large effect on the quality of sleep a person is getting. The more clutter there is in the room, the more your mind stays active, and the harder it is to get to sleep.

2. Try light exercises. In relation to the number 1, light exercises can be sweeping the floor, washing the dishes, and other light chores that release tension without activating the body. Yoga, meditation or walking can also help relieve stress.

3. Listen to soft music. Music relaxes and soothes the mind. Studies show that music has a therapeutic effect that allows the body to sleep.

4. Massage. Massage has been proven to be a great stress reliever as it loosens tension in your body, relaxes you, and helps sleep come more easily. If you can’t trade massage with another person, try self-massage techniques or use massaging tools.

5. Sex. Sex is an effective way to relieve tension because it triggers the release of endorphins or “happy chemicals” that improve well-being, which welcomes sleep. For those in a committed relationship, sex can be the best way to get a good nights sleep.

6. Bubble bath. Most people find soaking in a tub of bubbles relaxing as it rinses away tension and promotes a clean feeling. Try this before going to bed.

7. Try light games and avoid television. Playing light games such as sudoku and puzzles provide a good distraction from a stressful day and also a good alternative as they are less stimulating than television shows, action movies and late night news.

8. Journaling. Writing in a journal before going to bed releases your tension, helps solve problems, processes emotion, and helps bring clear thought. For this reason, journaling is a great way to end the day.

People respond differently to a certain activity so some of the given techniques may be effective for some but not for you. Be patient and look for one or two techniques that work for you.

Manage Stress and Keep Your Job

Related eBooks

Banging your head on your desk, screaming at the top of your lungs inside your office, sedating yourself with a drug, and playing a computer game are the so-called “tried and tested ways to relieve stress.” But while others do these for one reason or another, becoming a fanatic of these acts just to avoid killing your boss with a staple gun is not an excuse. And most probably, if you try any of these stunts, you will surely be looking for a job the next day. So, take a deep breath and look at what stress experts advise you to do:

Take a break

Some companies have game rooms for employees to sit and relax, play chess, ping-pong or videogames. If your company doesn’t have one, you can walk around the office, engage in some humorous conversation, or do something totally different from your work. Such activities will help relieve stress.

Stretch in front of your computer

If for any strange reason your company prohibits you from standing up during office hours, then you can still do some exercises right in front of your computer. Stretch your hands forward; cross your fingers behind your neck and push your head back so that you face the ceiling, and cross your legs and stretch them forward to relieve your back. These simple exercises are a quick relief to stress.

Think of the good stuff

If your boss is trying to kill you with lots of things to do in an outrageous deadline, it is still not a good reason to clean up your desk and storm out of the building. What you should do is try to think of the good things you want to achieve or the things you are looking forward to. Perhaps, you can think of your most anticipated Hawaiian vacation or that flat screen TV you want to buy on payday. Such thoughts will free your mind even for a short time.

Do not eat lunch while working

Among everything else, the main reason why you work is to eat, so take a break for lunch and eat anywhere except in front of your computer. Eating under pressure increases your risk of indigestion or flatulence.

Get enough sleep

Lack of sleep increases a person’s tendency to react to stress. In other words, people who had a bad night have a tendency to ‘blow things out of proportion’ the morning after. So make sure that you work hard and sleep well.
