Manage Stress and Keep Your Job

Banging your head on your desk, screaming at the top of your lungs inside your office, sedating yourself with a drug, and playing a computer game are the so-called “tried and tested ways to relieve stress.” But while others do these for one reason or another, becoming a fanatic of these acts just to avoid killing your boss with a staple gun is not an excuse. And most probably, if you try any of these stunts, you will surely be looking for a job the next day. So, take a deep breath and look at what stress experts advise you to do:

Take a break

Some companies have game rooms for employees to sit and relax, play chess, ping-pong or videogames. If your company doesn’t have one, you can walk around the office, engage in some humorous conversation, or do something totally different from your work. Such activities will help relieve stress.

Stretch in front of your computer

If for any strange reason your company prohibits you from standing up during office hours, then you can still do some exercises right in front of your computer. Stretch your hands forward; cross your fingers behind your neck and push your head back so that you face the ceiling, and cross your legs and stretch them forward to relieve your back. These simple exercises are a quick relief to stress.

Think of the good stuff

If your boss is trying to kill you with lots of things to do in an outrageous deadline, it is still not a good reason to clean up your desk and storm out of the building. What you should do is try to think of the good things you want to achieve or the things you are looking forward to. Perhaps, you can think of your most anticipated Hawaiian vacation or that flat screen TV you want to buy on payday. Such thoughts will free your mind even for a short time.

Do not eat lunch while working

Among everything else, the main reason why you work is to eat, so take a break for lunch and eat anywhere except in front of your computer. Eating under pressure increases your risk of indigestion or flatulence.

Get enough sleep

Lack of sleep increases a person’s tendency to react to stress. In other words, people who had a bad night have a tendency to ‘blow things out of proportion’ the morning after. So make sure that you work hard and sleep well.
