I lay this night attDubber. Sir Robert Southwell was Clerk of the Privy Council of Charles II, EnvoyExtraordinary to various Courts afterwards, and principal Secretary of Statefor Ireland in 1690. He died in 1702. His son Edward, who succeeded him,was principal Secretary for Ireland.—The Earl of Scarborough was Richard,created the first Earl of that name on April 15th, 1690. Ye 9th.—Much raine. Douglass went wth a strong detachmentof about 10,000 towards Athloan. Ye King wth ye rest of yearmy encampd about Cromlin. We hear of some Protestantsbeing killed about Enniskorthy, in ye county of Wexford, and ytye town is taken by ye Protestants of it and resolve to hould it out.There are some horse sent to theyr reliefe. Cromlin, i.e., Crumlin, is a parish three miles s.w. of the city of Dublin.

I tooke leave of M. G. Kirke and wrotesome letters for England. Ye iith.—Some showers. Ye King decampd from Crumlin tomarch towards Munster. Fresh feares of ye French coming toburn our ships. Sr R B, G W, Mr. Maynard, and I went onboard ye Ruby and came home late. Ye 12th.—Very hott. Orders given for my being Sheriffe ofLowth. Waited on ye Lds Comms, gave my security, and waslate wth R. Twigg att his chamber in Castle street. Ye 13th.—Very hott. I tooke out my commission for Sheriffe.Went to St. Patts [Patricks], where one Burridge preachd. Dindatt Cous Corkers, and came yt night to Dubber. Ye 14th.—Severall showers. I calld att Killroo, Peacockstowne,and Ratoth. Stayed some time att Drogheda. s first effect upon all minds isto excite a wish never to leave it. We almost contracted for atleast an occasional home at Nagasaki. We left Hono;-Kong andSingapore reluctantly; but Batavia, and more than all Buitenzorg,wins our thoughts irresistibly away from all that is practical in life,to delight in repose and serene contemplation. Mrs. Edgar BefRshlre left for TiThomas, Campbell county, early lastMonday morning, in response to atelephone message announcing theserious illness of her youngest broth-er Leslie Fenton. He died that day,the fatal disease being consumption. Chas. Clore, one of the enteprisingcitizens of Hebron, has spent severaldays in Burlington during the weekjust past, papering numerous apart-ments in the large brick residencebelonging to him and his brother,John, and occupied by deputy sher-iff B.
