y are of wood, bamboo,or thatch. Thatch is much used in the poorervillages; but even temples, as well as dwellings, have been known to be thatched. On theridge of this thatched roof the iris is frequentlyplanted; and when in bloom, its dark velvety-purple blossoms and light green leaves give thehouse a picturesque appearance. Seen from adistance, the village looks as if there were littlegardens on the tops of the houses. preserved the Mikados rare treasures of ages,is fully twelve hundred years old. This is a large, oblong building made of logs of keaki (kee-ah-kee), a reddish-brown wood, put together in thelog-cabin style, and it is supported merely onwooden legs resting upon loose stones, as in thecase of the ordinary house described above. Nopart of the building has been renewed except theroof, and this has been put on only three times. The present roof is made of tiles, and is about onehundred and fifty years old. This is, in all prob-ability, the oldest wooden building in the world,

A WAYSIDE TEA-HOUSE IN CHERRY-BLOSSOM TIME. The old castles which were the homes of thedaimio princes were built of stone; but these, too, were constructed so as to offer as littleresistance as possible to earthquake shocks. The walls slant from the base to the roof, andare supported within by immense timbers, theinward slope itself being a safeguard againstdanger from earthquakes. Buildings erectedaccording to the Japanese idea of what isnecessary to give security against earthquakeshave stood for centuries. Some wooden pa-godas of great height are known to have beenin existence for seven hundred years; and theold wooden museum at Nara, in which are and it is certainly a notable example of the almostimperishable nature of some Japanese woods. Most dwellings are but one story high. When the roof and framework are made, itremains to arrange for the outside walls andthe partitions of the rooms. Most foreignersregard the outside walls as huge windows, forthey are merely light wooaen lattice

tpassed right through the hat. TRIOKS f03 The Mesmerized Cross of the Orient* For this splendid and mystifying trick you will require sixordinary drinking straws. These straws must be fashionedinto the form of a cross by being bound with thread at theplace where the cross piece joins the upright. As an addi-tional security, and as a help to keep the cross perfectly flat, small pins are passed through the three straws at about half an inch from each extremity, as indicated in the first illus-tration. Besides these straws, a tiny wooden plug, just largeenough to fit inside the centre upright straw, will be required.A bent needle point is fixed into this plug, which is shown inthe drawing marked X. When desiring to present this illusion, the cross can bepassed round for examination, and the plug secretly insertedon receiving it back; or, better still, the cross can be fash-ioned with loose straws in front of the audience, who willthen be satisfied that it is quite ordinary and unprepared.

Suddenlythe cross is seen to move, and slowly it rises until it standsperfectly erect; all this while you can pass your wand aboveand round the cross to prove that it is not suspended in anyway by wires or strings. The trick is worked in this manner: The cross with theplug in it is laid upon the fleshy part of the base of thefingers, so that the needle point is inserted into the flesh. The hand is now held in the position indicated in the illus-
