In the new surveillance age we live in, everywhere you go you are being watched and your actions are being recorded. Using the same facial recognition technology agencies use to track people in surveillance footage, this interactive art installation will track its patrons and sketch them on the side of a building live. This interactive installation will use cameras and facial detection to sketch/paint the viewers of the installation while they are standing in front of it watching it paint. No actual footage of the patrons will be recorded, retained or sent over the internet. Only the sketches will be saved.

A nervous tic, an unconscious look of anxiety, a habit of muttering to yourself—anything that carried with it the suggestion of abnormality, of having something to hide. In any case, to wear an improper expression on your face… was itself a punishable offense."

US surveillance began centuries ago with the concept of slave passes, which allowed slave-owners to monitor and control the mobility of their "chattel." Yet the slave pass system was sometimes subverted by the rare slaves who could write, such as Frederick Douglass. These literate slaves could create their own passes and might thus gain freedom for themselves and other slaves. Trafficking in passes and "free papers" soon became a burgeoning business, one that the slave system grappled with for nearly two centuries.
From slaves, the history of surveillance next turns to the infamous Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which restricted Chinese immigration to the United States. All Chinese laborers were forced to register with the government and subject themselves to being photographed and fingerprinted. A whole apparatus of surveillance was created.
In the 1920s, government surveillance spread to political radicals, especially workers trying to organize union activity. J. Edgar Hoover headed this government surveillance unit which would later become the FBI. As the 20th century advanced, computer technology proved a powerful enhancement to the regime of surveillance. This allowed most devices and databases to be monitored and evaluated, including automobiles, Your car can be tracked by GPS, and your spending habits can be gleaned from accessing your credit card records. Internet and email are monitored in the workplace and cameras are just about everywhere.
For this show artists will explore the history of surveillance and how this affects us at this present time. They will in turn create work dealing with this theme which will include 2D work, installation, and new media.

Q: What is the purpose of this sign?
A: To warn possible intruders that their actions are being video recorded and they will be prosecuted for any violations.
Q: My sign is not as shiny as the picture and has a dull sheen to it?
A: Your sign has been pre-masked for protection during shipping. This is a thin film that should be removed (peeled off) before use.
Q: What if I don’t have a surveillance system?

I’ve recently moved to the US from Canada as a visiting scholar and have found that there’s a lot of little culture-shock and WTF moments about my temporary new home. I’ve taken to exclaiming "America!" when there’s something inexplicable to me (have I mentioned I just finished my US taxes?) or something just seems quintessentially American.
We were at the zoo and I spotted this Bald Eagle living under video surveillance. A few weeks prior, I’d watched one flying free in Canada while out walking my grandmother’s dog. "America!" indeed.
Did you know? Apparently many of the free Bald Eagles in the US are Canadian transplants since populations up north were more healthy.
WIT: A wandering eye in the zoo. Cropped to emphasize the camera and the eagle, then tweaked the colour saturation/luminescence to make the Bald Eagle stand out just a little bit more.

Seiko Mikami’s large installation “Desire of Codes” demonstrates how the boundaries between the body of data in the virtual world and the physical body in the real world are becoming blurred in the context of Information Society.
The nightmarish setting of this interactive work consists of three parts: a white wall on which 90 insect feeler-like objects with build-in surveillance cameras are mounted (Ninety Wriggling Wall Units); six giant robot arms equipped with video cameras and laser projectors hanging from the ceiling (Six Multi-perspective Search Arms); and a round projection surface 3.5 meters in diameter. This Compound Eye Detector Screen resembles an insect’s multifaceted eyes.
